Direct answer: glass shares light, but it does not replace a proper design

An interior glass partition works best between a room with a window and a darker area when you still need a physical separation. It can combine fixed panels with a sliding or hinged door, but the decision is not merely aesthetic: it must address circulation, privacy, noise, smells and maintenance. The useful question is not “which model looks attractive?”, but “which functions must this division preserve when it is open and when it is closed?”.

Decide what you want to separate before drawing the frames

First describe how each side will be used. Visual and acoustic separation may matter most for a study; closing and cleaning between a kitchen and living room; allowing light in without exposing the whole home next to a hallway. Choose whether the glass should be clear, translucent or include a privacy solution, and whether you need an opening leaf or only fixed panels. Measure the opening, note nearby doors, sockets, radiators and furniture, and check the opening path before asking for prices.

Glazing is also a safety element

The Technical Building Code’s Basic Document SUA addresses the risk of impact with fragile elements, and its supporting document classifies glass by impact performance and breakage pattern. The quote should therefore identify the glass composition and type suited to the location, dimensions and use, rather than simply saying “glass”. Ask the professional to justify the solution, specify frames and hardware, and explain how edges, junctions and cleaning will be handled.

Do not block the ventilation path

DB HS 3 sets out, for homes, a general airflow path from dry rooms towards wet rooms through supply, extract and transfer openings. If the partition changes the relationship between the living room, kitchen, hallway or bathroom, ventilation must be reviewed for the new layout. A closed glass door does not by itself guarantee airflow, and leaving it open is not a substitute for a planned and verified solution.

Request quotes for the same scope

Give every company the same description: removals, opening preparation, necessary technical checks, measurement, manufacture, specified glass, frames, tracks or hinges, plaster and paint finishes, possible electrical adjustments, protection of the home and cleaning. Also clarify whether the price includes design, permits or other procedures when required. Before making contact, prepare photos from both sides, a plan if available, approximate dimensions, the rooms to be separated, desired privacy, opening type, existing ventilation, preferred finish, municipality and intended timing.
