How a renovation works

From ‘this bathroom needs a change’ to a home that feels new, in six steps. The dust gets its moment in the spotlight. The finished home gets many more.

  1. Decide what you want to change

Define the rooms, what you're keeping and what you're renewing. A visit and measurements help assess the actual condition and feasibility.

A kitchen island looks lovely. Even better if it fits.

  2. Budget and permits

Agree materials, work, exclusions, payments and timescales in writing. Confirm the necessary permits, documentation and authorisations with the professional and the local council.

‘While we're at it’ deserves a quote of its own.

  3. Protect, dismantle and remove

Access routes and shared areas are protected, the owners' association is notified and the planned items are removed. Waste is managed appropriately.

The lift deserves to look good in the before-and-after photos too.

  4. Layout and services

The planned changes are made, and the water, electrical, heating and cooling systems are installed. Before the walls are closed up, what will be concealed is checked.

You won't see the cables. You'll appreciate them being properly installed.

  5. Bathrooms, kitchen and finishes

Waterproofing, floors, surface coverings, furniture and painting are coordinated. The order depends on the materials and their installation and drying times.

Bespoke worktops have busy diaries. Order yours in good time.

  6. Test, check and enjoy

Check taps, drains, sockets, doors and finishing details. Note anything outstanding and agree how it will be resolved. Keep invoices, certificates and warranties.

The first shower is a better way to christen the bathroom than any photo.

Before a wall is removed, a professional must check its role. If the structure, façade or shared elements are affected, check what technical input and authorisations are required.

BEFORE YOU ASK FOR A QUOTE

Three things for a good start.

  • Rooms, measurements and the changes you need.
  • Maximum budget and preferred dates.
  • Whether you'll be living at home during the work.
