The official picture for August

Spain’s Construction Production Index (IPCO) fell by 7.0% in August 2026 compared with the same month a year earlier in the seasonally and calendar-adjusted series; the unadjusted series fell by 4.2%. Compared with July, the adjusted index rose by 0.8%. By division, building construction recorded an adjusted annual rate of -32.3%, civil engineering -4.1%, and specialised construction activities +0.3%.

Building construction is not the same as renovation

The 32.3% decline relates to the building construction division and should not be applied automatically to every company, province or quotation. Many common rehabilitation and renovation tasks fall within specialised construction activities, whose adjusted annual rate was 0.3%, but that aggregate also includes many different types of work and does not measure residential renovation separately. The figure provides sector context, not a diagnosis of a particular project.

How a contractor can use the figure

Before changing purchasing, staffing or prices, compare the IPCO with your own indicators: quote requests, acceptance rate, weeks of contracted backlog, payment times and expected subcontractor workload. If new building construction is a large part of your business, review incoming projects more frequently; if maintenance and renovation dominate, separate those lines so that decisions are not based on a national average combining different activities.

Provisional data, not a rule or forecast

The IPCO measures the short-term monthly evolution of value added in Spain’s construction sector using information from around 3,600 units nationwide. It is not an index of costs, prices, permits or future contracting, and the INE labels the August results as provisional. The institute also updated the previous thirteen months of data in this release. Use it as a monitoring signal and confirm commercial decisions against the actual development of your order book.
